Biological Science Technician (Fisheries)

As a Biological Science Technician (Fisheries) duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Under the broad supervision of the supervisor, carries out daily activities related to the propagation, rearing, tagging, and stocking of multiple species and life stages of freshwater mussels. Maintains and operates specialized freshwater mussel recirculating and flow-through culture systems that include pumps, valves, filters, chillers, and heaters. Troubleshoots problems that develop in freshwater mussel culture systems and takes corrective actions. Cares for and feeds freshwater mussel brood stock; collects glochidia from gravid female mussels; conducts all aspects of in vivo production of juvenile freshwater mussels using host fish; conducts all aspects of in vitro production of juvenile freshwater mussels; collects transformed juvenile mussels from propagation systems and culture media, enumerates them, and transfers them to juvenile rearing units; rears juvenile mussels in a variety of specialized systems; calculates and adjusts feed levels; prepares mussel specific diet mixtures; samples, sorts, measures, and counts organisms; calculates growth and survival rates. Transfers animals between rearing systems; marks/tags organisms; cleans and sterilizes culture systems and equipment; follows the station's biosecurity protocols and alerts the supervisor of unusual conditions or biological occurrences that could impact the animals on station. Collects water samples, conducts basic water chemistry, and determines algal densities and size distribution. Collects, maintains, and summarizes detailed records of biological, chemical, and physical data. Surveys for, collects, and identifies (to the species level) freshwater mussels and non-game freshwater fishes from the wild and transports them live to the hatchery; transports and stocks animals into the wild. Qualifications:
To qualify for this position at the GS-7 level, you must meet the basic qualification requirements. Your resume must include sufficient information to substantiate your qualification, or you may be found not qualified. I possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-6 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience includes conducting daily activities related to the production of multiple species and life stages of freshwater mussels. Conducting both in vivo and in vitro propagation of juvenile mussels. Rearing of mussels in specialized recirculating and flow-through freshwater mussel culture systems. Tagging of freshwater mussels with laser engraving machine. Conducting qualitative and quantitative surveys for freshwater mussels, including the identification of live freshwater mussels to the species level using external characteristics; OR I possess one full year of graduate education which is directly related to the work of the position; (fisheries or aquatics); OR I possess a combination of education and experience as listed above which when combined equals 100% of the qualification requirements. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
